1) I shop w/ companies I recognize - either through national campaigns, companies that have brick & mortar stores, or companies recommended by friends.

2) I check to make sure the site has security mechanisms like Verisign.

3) I check to make sure the online company has a specific address & phone number to contact for customer service.

If the site is Verisign Verified, then the site is genuine and you can make secure payments

Look for the padlock symbol on the check out pages. It'll either be in the status bar or alongside the web address.
If you use Norton 360 then it will tell you straightaway if the page is safe.

use a well known website e.g. amazon! so you can bascially trust they're safe.
