I believe spelling is no longer drilled into people at school as it used to be. Texting has introduced a new spelling that is now invading proper English.
Touch typing has its problems though. I learned to do this about 15 years ago. One hand must react faster than the other, because before I typed that way I never used to get letters switched around. 'Teh' now seems to be a regular occurrence.
There are problems with spell checkers. The one on this site sometimes seems unable to finish when asked to check a long answer. It also has no facility to allow you to change a word if you don't wish to use any of its offered alternatives.
Some people just don't bother to check anything -- whether it's spelling, grammar, punctutation, brackets in mathematical formulae, or even whether a question makes sense.

Lol. I know what you mean:) These are people who are giving advice to people, is spelling correctly too much to ask? Besides which yahoo answers has a spell check, lol. I mean one click of a button and the job is done for them. However in some cases you might want to take into account that while we speak english in a majority of countries these days, the spelling of certain words in australia is different to how it is spelt in the U.S.A :) But you definately make a valid point :)

I've noticed that with the more I answer Q's, the lazier I get in using the spell checker and I start the abbrevs a lot more. I was raised to speak the King's English correctly.

Oh, most of the poor spellers have been through school- all right... -They just slept through most of their classes. I'm not a good speller- either, but at least I TRY to make myself understood... The laziness that's taking over from the wonderfull world of text-messaging, may be the REAL culprit to the decay of spelling correctly... :(

Internet chat doesn't help the issue but I don't think schools spend much time on spelling anymore. It's pretty pathetic.
