I take fairly good care of my computer, but i think i managed to get a trojan of some sort on it. Latley it has been really slow, more choppy then anythign really. If im watching a video every other second it kind of freezes then goes agian. Or when i type the words don't appaer till a few seconds after i type them. ITs gettin quite bad and i'd like to fix it. I am pretty computer literate, and ive been able to fix minor issues in the past. Is this something i can do myself, or do i need to get an expert, or should i jsut by a whole new computer. Any help is appriciated.

It sounds like either a trojan or you just have too much running inthe backround on your system that is eating up system resources.

For the Trojan or Virus just update you Anti-Virus Scanner and do a scan.

For the system lag issue you can use the System Configuration Utility to square that away pretty quick.

Here is what you need to do...

Go to Start, Run, type in msconfig , press OK.

Now go to the Start-up tab.

Anything that doenst have to do with programs that you dont use right after start up un check the box.

Good things to keep in your list would be the Anti Virus and Firewall program. Anything else that you think that you use right after boot.

Then go to the Services Tab, Then put a checkin the box that reads "Hide All Microsoft Services" then uncheck everything but your Firewall and Anti Virus.

Then you click Apply and Close.

It will ask you to Restart, After you Restart you will get a box that pops up saying that you used the system configuration utility... Put a check in the box that says.. Dont show me this agian and click ok.

Now everything that you have done is reversable by following the same steps I gave you and going back thru in case something was turned off that you decide later that you want.

If you get stuck or are still having issues please feel free to contact me thru my site for free tech support.

Good Luck!

Ok, this is what you do. 1) Go to www.download.com and get the free antispyware called "Ad-Aware SE". Install it, run it and scan your computer, maybe even twice. If you can get a hold of it, get reg edit..that will do wonders for your computer. 2) Delete all the Temp files, cookies, etc..but also delete all the programs that you DONT use. they take up space and space is necessary for a somewhat faster, or more stable running PC. If you have XP, try not using a "background" pic and revert back to the classic style Xp/2000 it will run a bit better without all the shading and extras. 3) blow out your case, the leading causes of slow computers are Dust bunnies, smoke and other stuff....see what people don't realize is that when the dust/smoke gets into the case, it could and does heat up and then gets melted to the motherboard and it can fry it. but more importantly is the spyware, get two or three and run them every week or so, you should be fine. Another thing to help is to re-install the XP System files. Good luck.

The best solution - if you don't need the data on your hard drive, is to do a complete format and reinstall your OS. That will fix ALL problems you have with your PC.

Another option is to download a virus scanner - Google Pack includes a free version of Norton, and AVG and Avast are also free.

A very easy to use (and free) system cleaner and repair utility is http://www.iobit.com/AdvancedWindowsCarePersonal/index.html

You may also want to install a spyware removing program, like Microsoft Defender (also free) as it works automatically.
