You can't talk to my mother-in-law about anything without her turning the conversation onto herself. It's incredibly annoying. If you've done something fun or interesting, she's already done it and it was even better; or if something as happened to you, it's already happened to her and it was much much worse. Holding a real, give-and-take conversation with her is impossible. If I try to say something, she just bulldozes right over me, tries to finish my sentences for me, even though she doesn't have a clue as to what I was going to say. I don't know if it is because she's older, or whatever. I guess a lot of people are like this, though, regardless of how old they are.

From the precarious base of ageism, I suppose the age with the poorest listening skills would be two year olds. I tend to listen to all children, because I write for them. They are my audience. But, in the wisdom of my older years, I have learned to identify with a glance those who aren't worth listening to. It's easy to dismiss the superficial, the hopeless, the negative, the emo, the boring and the whiny. The older you get, the more you've heard the same stuff over and over again from people going through each stage of life. And, the more and more you come to see what comes out of it in the long run.

It varies. Some are self-centred bores, some self-centred and fascinating. Many I find tend to listen better than most which is why I liked older people all my life. They have time for it, and are willing and interested in exploring people and life beyond "their own thing". My Grandchildren say I'm one of those and they appreciate it, which pleases me mightily - my children used sometimes to have to make appointments!

No, it is just the younger generation not wanting to accept advice from people that are older and wiser. Younger people think they know everything even though they have not really gone out and lived a real life, with no experiences.

older as in what? 60's 50's 20's? Don't we all feel that way about anyone at any age who is older than ourselves? And at the reverse --- people younger than ourselves give off that same vibe sometimes. Maybe they just get tired of listening to the crap we're saying

Its a simple rule.. they r the elderly and people always listen to their elders so they just want everyone to listen to them plus they r more experienced and they have more knowledge abt life and stuff.. so they think they r right and most of the times they r.... it may sound a little dominating now.. but later ull realise that its for ur good...lol !!!!!!!

Yes and no. Being one of them now, part of it is realizing (finally) that taking emotional stands on mundane issues just isn't worth the effort.
Also, realizing that people I know can have opposing opinions to the ones I hold, and it doesn't matter to the relationship I have with them. So if they have an opinion that I disagree with I can just ignore IT and enjoy them.

Older people have wisdom. They tend to poo poo
a younger persons grip on reallity. They have been there. Let the younger person live it before
giving an opinion.

it is about the experience of life... the older people have seen the life and they had experienced it.. and they know how to handle the things in their own way...
when u grew old .. u also behave in same manner....

Depends what you mean by older, I think it is pretty common. Even I am doing it right now by referencing myself in this very answer.
