My 10 week old son doesn't wake up or respond to claps in his ear or me speaking his name clearly very close to his ear when he's sleeping or awake. He responds and jumps to crumpling paper in his ear though. Could my son having a hearing problem? He passed his hearing tests in the hopsital right after birth and he has full 'conversations' with me all the time - he makes noises, I mimic or talk back, then he speaks again, etc.

He had his 2 month check up last week - no fluid. Doctor says his lack of response is nothing to worry about, but I'm getting more and more concerned. My instincts tells me something is not right here.

I am very grateful I live in Canada where these tests are covered by our Federal medical plan.

If your child is anything like mine, then he just has selective hearing and is ignoring you. He is talking back so he hears you, but if you really suspect something is wrong keep getting his ears checked. Only you really know your baby and know if something is wrong

In my state (Tennessee) you can have hearing tests paid for by the state (via Early Intervention) if you suspect a developmental delay. At that age it might be too early to tell, as the hearing tests that were performed at the hospital are likely what they would perform now. So you might be better served to wait until your baby would be more responsive and active.
If you have serious suspicions - you're the mom and by all means talk to the ped again or go to a hearing specialist on your own. Just be prepared - insurance might not cover a hearing eval (mine only covered if it followed a "traumatic illness", not for a suspected development delay).

I'm a great believer in Mom's gut instincts. If your alarm bells are going off, it's time to get a second opinion. It's better to be safe than sorry in this very important area, after all. If you're wrong, no harm is done other than to your wallet - a small price to pay for peace of mind; if you're right, then you have learned something ENORMOUSLY important for your baby.

Good luck!

Many babies pass the hearing test in the hospital, but after it is found that they have a hearing loss of some sort. You can have your doctor refer you for another hearing exam.

With the babbling he sounds like he is fine - but on the safe side I would get him tested again just to be sure.

get him checked again. He could have fluid in his ears which could be why his hearing seems inconsistent.

Yes, he could have a hearing problem. Please go see your pediatrician -- if money is tight, go to the health department. This is too important to put off!!! Go as soon as possible.
