(Check Engine Light)
There are many components that work together in the engine to maintain optimal engine performance and economy.
A service engine soon, or check engine light indicates that there is a sensor that is reading a condition that is "out of range".
Simply resetting the light does not solve the initial cause of the problem.
Replacing a number of parts trying to troubleshoot the problem in the hopes of getting the light to stay off is a tremendous waste of time and money.
The simplest, and most economical way to alleviate your issue, is to have an engine diagnostic done by a reputable shop to determine what caused the computer to signal you to begin with. Just reading the computer codes may not find the "cause".
That being said, if per-chance you feel the need to reset the light in the hopes that it was a "glitch" of some kind, you could disconnect the negative battery terminal for a couple of minutes to clear the check engine light. (ignition key turned on)

If the your car has gone to 3 different shops and their code reader detected a fault with the same code and has been replaced with a new one then the problem may lye in the a faulty wire to or from the main computer. Depending on the code reader they were using may not have the capability to perform a function that will reset adaptation or monitor the suspected part. Some late model cars have the capability of flashing the prom chip in the computer that fixes any known bugs in the chip. I suggest taking the car to the GMC dealer because they have the proper test equipment to monitor and performed specific activation test to isolate the problem. Your chances of them finding the culprit is much likely than a shop that doesn't have the proper equipment. If they do pinpoint the problem in a timely fashion they will call u give an accurate estimate to repair it. And that's when u decide if it's not worth fixing. But give them a try. It beats financing a new car and keeping the extra funds for more important things. Good luck!

If it is a 1996 or newer you can go to most auto parts stores and they will pull the codes from the computer. The light does not just come on for no reason.
Have the auto parts store reset all the codes and see if the light comes on again. If it does take it back and have them pull the codes again.
If the mechanic was not able to fix it he is not competent. Telling you the computer is just screwed up is an excuse for his inability to troubleshoot.
If you are unable to replace parts and troubleshoot yourself take to to a competent mechanic.
Selling a car when you know something is wrong is dishonest.

Hey Cutesy Babe - may be your mechanic is just taking your for a ride. The check engine light don't go out automatically with repairs. They have to be reset after repairs. Unless they are resetting the light and then it comes back on, they are just robbing you.
Either way, it seems like these mechanics don't know what they are doing. Find another mechanic or just go to a dealer.

The check engine light is not suppose to go off when you replace the faulty part.
It has to be reset.
Being a ford mechanic I cannot help you with regards to resetting, on the ford it is as simple matter of removing the battery terminal.
Get advice from the dealership, advice doesn't cost anything.
Good Luck

Its against federal law to disable emissions equipt.check with a dealer if it is the computer they must warranty it for 8years or 80,000 mi (10 or 100,000 in Calif.) Engine lites can be tricky and there are false codes that can turn on the lite, or your prob could be intermittent or on the wiring making replacing parts a guessing game. A dealer could reprogramm the PCM for false codes.

Run it by an Autozone and ask them to hook up the trouble code reader. It'll show up, they'll tell you what is showing as the problem, then ask them to delete the code. Which should turn it off until something is going wrong.
