You could do a picture frame of you in different stages of your life and thank him for helping you become the person in which you are. Skip the tie. Also a gift card to his favorite store would be a good thought.

Write in a card, bought or home made, all the things you love about him, and the things that make him a great Dad. Then on fathers day, see if he wants you to hang out with him, watch tv or whatever he is doing, ask if he wants you to, and a big hug and kiss. Sometimes a Dad might appreciate to have time alone so if thats what he wants, then respect that.
You sound very thoughtful, for not waiting till the last minute to plan this......:)

It depends how your relationship is with him and how is the rapport between the two of you. It would be great if you go out for dinner...or you could do something together, like play a game or go fishing.....try to think of something that both of you like to do.... if you'd like to buy him a gift, then you could try these :-a watch, a neck tie, shirt, a coffee-mug with a snap of the both of you imprinted... a video clip of something memorable...that'll make him smile....
Whatever you give him, it's the thought that counts. He may not spell it in a thousand words, but whatever you do for him will touch his heart and will be appreciated. -Jessie, cousellor (silverlininghope@yahoo.com)

If he is into golf--offer to hit a bucket of balls with him at the driving range, into baseball--offer to take him to a batting cage, into basketball--take him to the park and play one on one with him, into cars--look in the paper for a local car show, into gargae sales--spend the day trapsing sales in expensive neighborhoods! Dads just like together time and its a bonus when that time is spent on something he likes to do!

You should give him an album of you and him that includes pictures and such. One reason: it shows that you put effort into it 2) show him how much you apperciate those times with him 3) show you care

Find something that he likes... a hobby, a sport, an interest, and get him something related to that.
