In a nursing career, I think psychology can be effective in terms of understanding your patient's needs better, so that you can better assist them. I've seen and heard nurses who treat their patients as if they were objects instead of human beings. I think one of the biggest advantages psychology can offer you is the ability to understand people or the society in general. Psychology enables you to understand people better. It helps you understand people's behavior-what individuals tend to do and not to do in social situations. For example, why do people tend to ignore an individual's cry for help when there are more people around, but are willing to help when it is the other way around (not many people are there)? Would the presence of many people speed the process of helping that individual, or would it hinder it even more (everyone else assumes someone is going to get help)?

It also makes you more open-minded as a person (and makes you better too :D).
Just my opinion~

it all depends upon the agenda of your chosen field and your own personal agenda,..does one wish to be a nurse b/c one wishes to help others or does one have the just want to collect the sweet paycheck and if the patient dies, oh well, someone else will fill the bed soon enough, attitude,..this basic summation i believe go for any field, although not all paychecks are sweet and patients can be replaced with customers, guests, patrons and the such like,..psychology is one that could infiltrate, educate, assimilate and/or eviscerate ideals,..military, politics, religion, business, friends, family, communication and the like such,..

Psychology can help you understand your patients and their families as well as colleagues. It will help you understand how the mind works and help you know what to say when their seems to be nothing appropriate to say. It will help you be more tolerant of the predicament of others. Psychology is one of the few college basics that I think you will use always no matter what field you go into.

As a teacher I will use what I learned in my psychology classes to better work with children and understand them. In order for me to effectively teach children, I have to make sure they are getting their psychological needs met (helping them to socialize, grow, talk about problems, etc.)
