A rumor has circulated that could affect greatly for future advancement in my company. I'm a firm believer that I should shrug off any harmless rumors about me. However, in this instance, it seriously can jeopardize my entire career and throw me off balance; and I don't tolerate it one bit. What is the best action to do?

Confront whoever is spreading the rumor

Office gossip is the pits and it can be deadly. It wouldn't be the first time that someone, expecting advancement or just a jerk, would start something to try to derail you. It doesn't sound like the rumor is harmless and I would work on a plan that stops it or stops the person that started it. When they're playing with your future, you need to fight. You need to be very careful what you do and without being there it would be hard to say just what to do. Remember whoever is involved in this will do it again because they can. . .Lots of luck. . .And don't forget what they have done. Always remember and beware what they are capable of. . .May you advance enough to give them what they have coming. . .

If you are aware of who it was that started the rumour, you need to confront the person. Also, make sure you have a witness for when you do so (and don't do this in the middle of the office, catch the person on their lunch or something). If you can't get anywhere with confronting the person then the next step is to go to your supervisor. (be sure that this is in fact the person who started the rumour and document when and who you heard the rumour from as well just in case you do need to take it that step further). I know it is not always the easiest thing, you don't have to put up with this as this person in reality is "Harrassing" you and this is not tolerated in any workforrce.

You don't have to put up with it plain and simple. Follow these steps and it should most likely help (stay calm, don't freak out and try not to let it get to you, easier said then done, but people who do these childish things want to get a reaction out of you, so don't let them get the satisfaction! It is not worth your livelyhood!) Good luck! :) Things will work out!!

Confront the person responsible for this rumor. If you don't know who it is, then I would make a general announcement about the rumor and that it is a lie. Whoever started it has an agenda to ruin my career. Look for the person who has the most to gain from your downfall.

Go to your supervisor. Monday AM, as soon as you have your coffee and have calmed down.
