Lots of supplies thrown out of wagons along the Oregon, California, Mormon, etc. Trails; the demise of the buffalo/bison due partially to the transcontinental railroad as people could and did shoot them directly from the trains; pollution from the trains themselves; cattle drives; mining; overgrazing;erosion and pollution of streams....just a few things that I can recall.

Loss of prarie habitat in the Midwest from farming, deforestation in the Midwest and the West Coast. Population crashes for buffalos and top predators like wolves. Massive cyanide pollution of rivers from gold mining. Air pollution from wood stoves and water pollution from untreated human waste in the towns and cities. (Chicago and Cincinnati were the first two American cities to enact laws ensuring cleaner air in 1881.)
