i have a 2002 mazda 626. i think the engine is knocked, because of a rattling sound from the engine when the car is started. i am about to buy an engine which has 21000 miles on it...does replacing the engine reduce the value of the car by a whole lot. the engine in the car right now has about 90,000.. the kbb value with the new engine (21,000 miles) is 7295, while the kbb value with the 90000 mile engine (if it was running) is 5545. how much should i expect to get from the car, when its fixed.

It is unusual for a Mazda to have engine problems at 90,000 miles. Before replacing the engine, take the car to the dealer and have them diagnose the problem. It could be something simple, like loose exhaust shielding or something more serious, like internal engine problems.

Simply by replacing the engine with one with lower mileage will not automatically increase the value to what the lower mileage vehicle has. The rest of the car still has 90,000 miles of wear on it.

Be sure to check value of car now plus cost of new engine. You might be money ahead to sell it as is and get another car with lower mileage using what you get for your car plus what the repair would cost.

replacing engine for the same one will not reduce the value of the car but if u upgrade your engine (like 4cyls to 6 cyls if the model of the car support the change) the value will increase but if you do it backwards (swap to 6cyls to 4cyls that will decrease the value)

the motor is 21000 miles so you can expect if you do a good maintenance you can get like 140.000 but with GOOD mantenience

It shouldn't reduce the value of your car. If you had an old musclecar with the wrong engine in it, that would be a different story.
