Randolph's used 12 more gal of fuel oil in Oct than in Sept and twice as much oil in November as in Sept. If they used 132 gal for 3 months, how much was used during each month?

I want to say the answer is 44 but, not sure. If they used different amounts each month as stated in the problem.

If you break the problem up into pieces it makes it a lot easier to solve. We want to try to figure out the value for Sept since every other value has a relationship to it. Since the Randolph's used 12 more gal of fuel in Oct than in Sept. that is x+12. In November they used twice as much as in Sept that is 2x and of course we have Sept which is x. Therefore we can put this into an equation like this x + 2x + x + 12 = 132 or simplifying 4x+12 = 132. Solving for x gives us 30. We can prove this is the answer by running it back through our first equation. 30 + 2*30 + 30 + 12 = 132 and we then know there were 30 gals used in Sept, 42 gals used in Oct and 60 gals used in Nov.

Let X = amount of fuel oil used in Sept.
Let Y = amount of fuel oil used in Oct.
Let Z = amount of fuel oil used in Nov.

then

1. Y = X + 12
2. Z = 2X
3. X + Y + Z = 132

do you see how I got these three equations?

Start with equation 3 and in place of Y use equation 1 and in place of Z use equation 2.

132 = X + Y + Z = X + (X + 12) + (2X) = 4X + 12 or 4X = 120 or X (Sept) = 120/4 = 30. Then from equations 2 and 3 we get Y (Oct) = 30 + 12 = 42 and Z (Nov) = 2*30 = 60.

Oct=Sept+12
Nov=2Sept
So:
Sept+Sept+12+2Sept=132
or 2Sept+12+2Sept=132
or 4Sept+12=132
so 4Sept=132-12
4Sept=120
Sept=120/4
so Sept=30
Oct=30+12=42
Nov=2 x 30 =60

Let the amount of fuel used in Sept be x.
Then, amount used in Oct = x+12
And, amount used in Nov= 2x
Then , they used 132 gal in 3 months,
So x+(x+12)+2x=132
So 4x+12=132
So 4x =120
So x =30
So they used 30 gal in Sept, 42 gal in Oct and 60 gal in Nov.

Let Randolph use x gallons in September.

In October, he uses (x + 12) gallons and in November, he uses 2x gallons

He has used 132 gallons in those 3 months.

x + (x + 12) + (2x) = 132
4x + 12 = 132
4x = 120
x = 30
x + 12 = 42
2x = 60

He uses:
30 gallons in September
42 gallons in October
and 60 gallons of oil in November

o = amount for October
s = amount for September
n = amount for November

12 + s = o
2s = n
132 = s + o + n

132 = s + (12 + s) + 2s
132 = s + 12 + s + 2s
132 = 4s + 12
120 = 4s
30 = s

12 + s = o
12 + 30 = o
42 = o

2s = n
2(30) = n
60 = n

September = 30
October = 42
November = 60

Test:
30 + 42 + 60 = 132?
72 + 60 = 132?
132 = 132?

Yes.

x=Sept
x+12=Oct
2x=Nov
--------------
total=132

132 = (x+12)+(2x)+x
132 = 4x+12
120 = 4x
30 = x

Sept=30
Oct=42
Nov=60
-------------
total=132
