You really do need a filter for a tank of any size. I would strongly suggest a power filter for your tank. Whisper is one of several good brands readily available and very reasonably priced.

Also, I would remove the shell from a freshwater aquarium. It will cause unwanted changes to your water chemistry that will cause you problems in the future.

As for a heater, you will need one if you are keeping tropical fish.

A heater is a must for tropical fish. If you want goldfish, you don't need one.
Only 2 goldfish will live comfortably in the size tank you have. They need lots of space for gill function. They also make lots of waste.

IF you have an external filter, you can put the air anywhere you want. The only reason they need the plastic tubes is to run the undergravel filter. I don't have a powerhead, and my fish do just fine.

I've never had real shells in my tank. Consider getting a plastic one.

You will need to purchase a power filter and heater if you plan on keeping tropical fish in your tank. Like Magic man said remove the shell from your tank! There are plenty of affordable power filters available, search on line or walmart and most pet stores have a good variety. I suggest an Aqua Clear 30 power filter, this is a great filter for your size tank and will be easy to maintain. Do you have lighting? Hope this helps, good luck!

relies upon on the size of the tank. individually I wouldnt get a tank smaller than 30 gallons because of the small quantity and alter in water parameters could be a great one. i exploit a canister clear out in my fifty six gallon angel fish tank. It took approximately 3 weeks for the tank to top cylce the place advantageous micro organism could advance in the clear out. Canister filters are the extra perfect determination for larger aquariums because of the fact they are able to provied all 3 varieties of filtration, mechanical, organic and organic and chemical. extra emphasis is placed on the organic and organic filtration because of the fact is the suitable form. Canister filters inspite of the shown fact that extreme priced on the start pay for themselves in the long-term. uncomplicated grasp on lower back filters are nice for small aquariums. All in all if it replaced into my money and searching a for a protracted-lasting wholesome tank to not would desire to do away with fish to scrub the tank if bypass 40 gallons or larger ideally a fifty 5 gallon and get a canister clear out rated for approximately 20 gallons extra suitable than the size of the tank and a clear out that could cylce the completed quantity of water thrice according to hour that's the suitable and it has worked wonders for me. larger aquariums make the main of moist/dry purposes which for my area could be explored on the one hundred gallon or above mark.

As long as there are bubble coming out of the shell it should mean its oxygenating the water. You might want to thing about the kind of filter that sucks in the dirty water and cleans it too. Mine is called a Whisper and it uses charcoal and looks like a little waterfall. You don't have to have a heater, but if you don't it really limits the choice of fish you can have.

You definately should purchase a separate filter to the one you have, that way you provide enough oxygen.
I recommend a whisper filter, is very easy to clean and easy to exchange filters on.
If you are planning on putting tropical fish in, you definately need a heater.
