knocking on wood is something to ward off unfortunate consequences, to break a jinx.

so, if a person says, "i've never had a broken bone," then they may have jinxed themselves, and they might now get a broken bone. so in order to ensure they don't get a broken bone soon, they knock on wood.

it's a superstition- it doesn't really make a difference. and i don't know where it originated.

My understanding of "Knock on Wood" means anti-jinxing something that you say or do when you're not sure of the answer/outcome...so when you knock on wood, you're covering yourself from "bad luck" so to speak, which I don't believe in anyway.

That is a reference to hoping a negative turns out positive. Example: My car battery is almost dead. I hope it starts one more time, knock on wood.

It is a symbol of repelling the devil from your words.

For example, if you say, "Nah, she won't die anytime soon," and someone says, "Knowck on wood," basically, it prevents the devil from infusing sickness or death (or whatever matter you were talking about) on the subject.

But you actually have to knock on wood three times, as the supertition states.

According to ancient Pagan beliefs, spirits and gods lived in trees, so it made perfect sense to knock on those trees when you wanted to summon their protection. Supposedly, the first knock was to get the gods' attention and the second knock was to say thank you. This way, not only did they cover all their bases, but they were polite about it, too.

It's been said that, later on, Christians adopted this superstition from Pagans and, in turn, made it more about Jesus and less about woodland fairies. Touching any wooden surface was believed to be equivalent to touching the wood of the cross, and doing so was seen as a call for God's protection. Some Christians even carried pieces of wood with them just to be safe.

It is an old superstition. As in olden days, trees were believed to harbor protective spirits and to rap on a tree was to call on the friendly spirit living in the tree. This spirit would then protect the rapper from any impending evil or bad luck.

When you say something bad never happened to you, it prevents you from jinxing yourself and making it happen. The wood can be seen as the Cross of Christ. see link here:
