If you ask the players and coaches, they would tell you Andruw Jones is the greatest defensive player in the game since Willie Mays, but he hasn't garnered wide fan recognition because most casual observers of the game don't possess the knowledge to appreciate how truly special he is.
He makes seemingly easy defensive plays on balls hit to the shallow part of center field that most players would have to let drop for base hits.
Players and coaches have the knowledge to appreciate the fact that Andruw Jones can play the most shallow center field in the game, and still cover almost anything hit over his head, with the result being he can cover more territory than perhaps any player in history.

Willie Mays in the history of the game is the best center fielder, that is until Andruw Jones retires. Andruw is rediculous.

Willie Mays has the record with 12 gold gloves and who will ever forget "the catch." He is probably the obvious choice but Ken Griffey Jr. was incredible back in his prime and Andruw Jones just might break Mays' record if he can stay healthy.

Tris Speaker, Dwayne Murphy, Richie Ashburn.
Only talkin' defense here.
Ashburn was contemporary with Mays, Mantle, and Snider, and EVERYONE said he was the best on D.
Cobb gave Speaker props.

It'd have to go to Mays, just for having to play center in the Polo Grounds (498ft straight away) that was a lot of ground to cover.
