A medium.

In other words, how does the information pass from speaker to listener? This is why television, radio, et. al. are referred to as "the media."

Simple my dear its called a "DIALOG" meaning communication is a two-way system meaning there must be a speaker and a listener as well. That's what your teacher have been trying to impress on your mind with his/her examples telephones, faxes; one transmits - one receives..

a medium.
the fax machines, telephones and etc. are the medium of communication, in the sense that you (speaker) uses this medium (fax machine/telephone, etc.) to communicate with the other party (listener)

You also need a subject, otherwise it's just noise. Multiple media resources, networking--it mostly depends on how your teacher and/or book define it.
