Distract him with a pint of good old Irish stout! And greeneyes - a shillelagh is a walking stick that doubles as a club with which to knock the evildoer - primarily English ones - smartly upside the head, begorran!

Ask him to tell you why first. They're great storytellers and he'll have to set down the shillelagh to gesture while he talks, and if you guide the conversation right, he'll talk so much he'll get thirsty and go looking for his ale and forget all about why he was there.
And please listen to him, because somewhere in there he'll tell you why he was so mad in the first place. Don't do whatever that was again.
