David Chase is brilliant... everbody gets what they wanted, their own personal ending, just the way they envisioned it... For those who wanted Tony to die... he died... For those who wanted him to live... he lived... for those who wanted him to rat... I don't think he would do that... and for those who said he was going to prison... he went to prison ! There you have it, a custom ending to The Sopranos !

I agree 100%. It Boils down to one thing, watching the show for all this time, how have you viewed Tony? Good Guy or Bad guy? David Chase wanted the ending to reveal something about ourselves and how we have our perspectives lined up.
If you viewed Tony as an inherently good guy this whole time, as being justified in his deviousness and killing and being a victim of circumstance with his mother and in the life of the mob because of his father, then you see him with his family, enjoying life after tying up some loose ends. LIFE GOES ON!!

If you have always seen him as bad, a sociopath that is choosing to be bad......and is a villain etc...then you see him dying, getting shot, being part of the mob game that he contributed to. Life ends....black.
Thats why he chose that song, it is dichotomous in nature..Don't stop believing and the song ends at Don't stop....leaving out the believing......

Chase wanted us to choose our own adventure. It is not meant to be one way, it is meant to be both ways for us to choose ouselves as a reflection of who we are....

Brilliant.

People liked The Sopranos-for various reasons--good ending would have been great!

That's a cop-out (excuse the expression). The show is too superior to pander to an ending that might satisfy everyone. We want boldness, creativity, irony, and perhaps a little justice--or not. The ending did not match the body of work. We even saw Michael Corleone die in the last Godfather movie. I don't recall the screen blanking out. I could swear in Italian right now but I'll refrain.

Because it was upsetting but I took the liberty to finish the scene up:

Ok alright I will give you the ending:

Tony sat with his family as the man who went to the restroom comes out and radioes for back up and then most of the shifty characters turn out to be undercover FBI agents and attempt to arrest Tony. Tony tells them he "ain't goin alive" and decides to pull a hand gun and blast himself in the head. Fades to Black screen as the FBI agents close in to look at the dead mobster's remains.

THE END

Did you like it? Better than David Chase he can kiss my a**!

I see what you are saying, but honestly, what was the point of watching it if you had to make up your own ending-I could have NOT watched it and gotten the same outcome. And the rambling about AJ and the car fire, blah, blah. It just seemed like a normal episode. Many episodes have been boring, but there was always the hope that next week would be better. No closure.

This series was so well-written that it deserved a place in history with a well-written, well-planned ending. This was a disappointment and a disgrace to the series and the actors.

The ironic thing is that the entire episode appeared to focus on "closure" and yet the dedicated viewers received NO closure whatsoever. What a disappointment!

Everyone expected a thrilling finale, expecting to see plenty of action, as was typical in some of the best episodes. The finale was...too vanilla...vague. Except for Phil getting whacked. I didn't like the "black" ending. C'mon, after all these seasons, the writers couldn't come up with something better than "fade to black"?

I think people just love to complain....

I loved the episode. Classic Sopranos complete with dumb Paulie-isms, a head shmush, italian superstitions, and idiot AJ.

Great stuff.

I found this on another question and it's perfect:

" The first episode of sopranos Bobby asked what it was like to die and didn't Tony say, "It all goes black"
I can't remember for sure, but maybe that is the answer to everyone's question. "
