It's a way of recognizing the better umpires, by giving them some spotlight (not much, but some) by working the postseason (and some bonus income as well). Since there's never more than four games ongoing, instead of the usual 15, there is a surplus of working umps available, so it doesn't stress the labor pool.

How Garcia managed to blow that call, though.... feh.

well usually umpires dont make mistakes like that but theyre human. its always safer to have an ump out there than to not have one at all

My guess is just so they have the best view going down the line. And everyone makes mistakes, unless you have an argument...
