Idon't agree that the whole episode was lame, several Good things in my opinion:
1. Phil dying in a really gross way
2. Its established that both Soprano kids don't develop more than their parents (AJ sells out his principals for a beemer and Meadow is deluding herself with that persecuted italians crap)
3. Creepy Cat reincarnation of Chris
4. The FBI guy embarassing himself by rooting for Tony --He's like the viewer, we all start to like the guy even though he is a sick murderer.
But yeah that ending cut to black, WTF????
I thought my cable had gone out.

I thought my cable went out, too! Ever since Christopher died, they have been building up all this tension. We sat on the edge of our seats tonight and kept waiting...and waiting...and waiting...for SOMETHING to happen. Thought the whole fam was going to get whacked by the guy walking into the men's room or the 2 black guys that walked in, then thought Meadow was going to get it outside or be the only one left standing after the place blew up or something.
SO annoying that it was so open-ended, but kind of genius as well. Look at all of us, still thinking about it. You can't get onto the show site/message boards or the HBO site. If/when they make a movie, you know all of you will be all over it! I know we will, even though we thought the last few seasons were kind of lame compared to the first few. They left us wanting more.
Why'd they have to kill Bobby? I loved Bobby.

I gotta say for whatever reason I didn't want to see Tony whacked.
I have been unsure about the ending, my 17 son was livid, thought it was stupid, but I'm starting to come 'round to the brilliance of it.
Honestly, I had a horrible thought he'd wake up as Kevin Finnerty again and realize his whole Soprano life was but the dream of a bored salesman...
The ending was meant to challenge, not everyone will like it. I think after my son thinks about it a bit, he may see it differently.
The expectations were so high, that I don't know how they could have ended it.
Still say as endings go, "Six Feet Under"' had the best one and so neatly packaged.
Maybe Tony could have woke up in bed with Suzanne Pleshette? Sorry obscure TV reference to Bob Newhart show, some will get--some won't.
Overall, a dragged out episode, but it's growing on me.

Agree with you 110%!
This series was so well-written that it deserved a place in history with a well-written, well-planned ending. This was a disappointment and a disgrace to the series and the actors.
The ironic thing is that the entire episode appeared to focus on "closure" and yet the dedicated viewers received NO closure whatsoever. What a disappointment!

I think that the writers wanted us to see our bloodthirst, how bad we wanted him to get killed. The guy didn't open fire on the whole family, and thats what everyone is upset about. Think about what you wanted to happen, and decide whether you should be disturbed by that. Another possibility is that the writers wanted to have people talking forever, immortalizing the series. Another possibility I've heard would be that the guy set off a bomb in the bathroom, wich would explain the abrupt end. Anyway I like the Natural born killers, violence-crazed america explenation.

It's an embrarassment to my Italian side...and HBO. We should seriousl boycott the actors for agreeing to act those worthless last 5 minutes of a blackout.

I agree, I thought Meadow was going to get gunned down while parking her car, or the guy sitting at the counter was going to shoot Tony in the head.

I wouldn't call it lame. Different, yes. Disappointing, well...yes. I think they were trying to give the viewer the impression that THEY were being whacked (everything faded to black, silence, etc.). Plus there is a ton of movie potential. You have to give them some credit for breaking the mold.
