They are thought highly of by most, but it depends upon the reader/critic, does it not? I am not an expert, but it seems to me that most Roman writing is historical documentation, such as the Plinys, elder and younger, and Josephus, while other countries, most well known is Greece, created literary works, such as plays, discussions/essays like Plato, and of course The Iliad and The Odyssey, to name a few.
