Cookies may include info on preferences, logins and other such items that make using the site easier. All web browsers use them, some are saved some are not, because of your security settings on your browser which can be chaged through the tools menu in the software. Beware of some sites saving cookies (i mean ones that aren't legitamate looking) as they may use cookies as a way to track activty (like passwords) when you use your browser. Some sites use cookies as a way to give you targeted ads, so you might like to think about changing your settings and cleaning them up occasianlly.

Cookies are just small .txt (text) files that by themselves cannot hurt your computer. Cookies are "set" by almost every web-site that you visit, on every visit. You can delete all your cookies today and by tomorrow you will have dozens again just by visiting web-sites.
Cookies are NOT a virus.
Cookies do NOT slow down a computer, at least the first million or so that you might have on your computer!
Kids are the people that are always the most nervous about cookies. Because cookies are an easy way for Mommy and Daddy to find out exactly what their darling 'lil children have been looking at on the web.
Personally, If I happen to remember it, I will delete my cookies every 6 months or so :-)
Just don't delete any cookies for websites that you have forgotton the password for. Without cookies you will need to sign-in again until the site generates a new cookie.
Cookies are much ado about nothin'.

A cookie is created by your web browser sending a text file to an Internet website server and from the website server and back. This information is called a "cookie". If you personalize a web page to look a specific way, it is this cookie that remembers it for you. Example: If you sign in to a web page and select "remember my password", this becomes a cookie stored in your address bar so when you return to the site your password is still there. Or when you return to a website you are still logged in. Cookies are wonderful things!

A cookie is something that's yummy to eat. Hahaha! Sorry couldn't resist.
Seriously, in laymans term, a cookie is placed on your system when you visit certain sites to save information about your surfing habits, frequented sites and other info about you so that when you return to the same site again some other time, the site has a way of identifying you and can offer a more personalized approach to your needs.

Alex has the correct answer, cookies are normally harmless spy ware that keep track of your surfing habits. The easiest way to keep your privacy is to clean your cookie file on a daily basis. Or some anti virus programs will clean the file for you.

a cookie is a small file left behind by some websites that you visit, they may contain passwords or other information that you choose to save (like when you press remember my password, or keep me singed in for 2 weeks).
