I think that the screen went "black" all of a sudden bc that was Tony getting shot. In other words...We, along with Tony, were watching his wife and son eating onion rings, watching people come in to the restaurant, and then it suddenly goes black- because that is how he experienced being shot- just a gun to the head and it is black. What do you think?......

...and my husband just reminded me....in Goodfellas, there was the Henry Hilll line, "if that had been a wise guy, I never would have seen it coming (I am doing a bad job of paraphrasing). We expected he was about to get killed (with 1 minute left!) but he was at relative ease with his family...except Meadow, struggling outside as her Dad is about to be killed....I am trying to make SOME sense, bc I am frustrated....

...and right before it happens, AJ says he is going to "remember the good times", and Tony pats his hand...very similar to a typical interaction right before or after someone dies...

Its a possibility. We just don't know. I actually liked the ending. Everything was left up in the air. Maybe Tony got clipped, maybe he got pinched by the feds. Who knows.

It's not like the screen went blank and then the credits started to roll. It was blank for a good minute or two. Something happened in that time. For now, I think we are expected to talk about it excessively in every venue possible. I do believe at some point in time we will get to see what elapsed during that minute or two. Either he gets arrested or someone at that table gets shot, but who it is, who knows.

It may be what you say but then why not just show the entire last 4 minutes through his eyes. I think they will show you the ending when you go to the movies to watch cleaver. That is one way to draw in a crowd.

That's exactly what I thought, and I thought that the ending was amazing (Against what I hear most people do). It goes black because you're the first to "Go". Most bullets are supersonic, so there's no guarantee that you'll hear the bang. Or perhaps you died blown up. Anyway, the uncertainty made it even more realistic.
BTW, don't tell me you didn't freak out when the screen went blank, thinking that someone messed up with your HBO!

Well...There were some suspicious people in and out. When Meadow was trying to park the car and that thuggy looking guy left, I thought he was going to have road rage, Tony would come out and get whacked over a parking mishap. So confused.

that's one conclusion you can draw. They deliberately left the ending open ended so you can draw whatever conclusion you want. Tony gets shot or nothing happens to Tony and life moves on for the Sopranos.

To trudi 100, her name was MEADOW, not Autumn.
To the asker, you get a star. I'm positive you got it right because the wiseguy waited for Meadow to come in before he gave Tony what he never saw coming so it would happen in front of his family.
About Carm and AJ eating the onion rings...
Was it my imagination, or did they never bite a ring, just place one on their tongue and close their mouth like taking communion, foreshadowing the coming trip to a church for a FUNERAL perhaps?

This series was so well-written that it deserved a place in history with a well-written, well-planned ending. This was a disappointment and a disgrace to the series and the actors.

The ironic thing is that the entire episode appeared to focus on "closure" and yet the dedicated viewers received NO closure whatsoever. What a disappointment!

I agree 100%. However, the writers did a good job of making it vague enough that we can spend forever debating what happened.

This is literally the best finale to any show I've ever seen. Absolutely brilliant, genius stuff. Kudos to the writers.

ok listen guys...u gotta wach the end of the episode again and wach closely...here is wat ull c... when tony walks into the diner he looks at himself sitting down at the table...u can be sure of this b/c he is wearing different clothes when he sits down...i dont no wtf that means...

in previous seasons it had been told to us that tony's dad
died just as his daughter (janus) walked in... if u watch closely u will see janus walk in shortly after tony sits down...this is used to
signify the possibility of that happening again...then u will c the sports store owner who tony destroyed walk in wearing a brown kinda hunting jacket... he is the guy that a couple seasons ago got into gambling trouble with tony and tony took over his store...

HE IS THE 1 WHO WACKS TONY...he comes in and sits down hunched over...hiding his eyes as not wanting to be noticed...and alas..."u probly dont even here it when it happens rite?" (this is bobby talking to tony in the 1st episode of the season...tony had this flashback as he was laying down in the last episode... there would be no reason to have had that in unless it had some huge significance)... and finally... tonys daughter walking in to c her dad get shot just as janus did so many years ago... u hear the bell of her walking in and then
blackness... nuthing...

it signifies the neverending cycle of the soprano family...aj will become tony...meadow will become janus...carmela will become livia (tonys mom)...and cycle of violence goes on and on and on....absolutlely amazing...i HATED the ending at first...but when i wached it again...and understood it...it is really the most amazing ending possible for the show...we really would not have been satisfied with the boring u c tony git shot ending... this was priceless...remember..this was not an action show...it was a drama about a FAMILY

and this my friend is what the ending was all ab

Good explanation and a possibility. But they could also be leaving it open for a possible movie since there are too many loose ends (Paulie, AJ and Meadow's futures, NY/NJ's futures.
