I know that Postcard were sent for Halloween around 1915, but Halloween costumes did not appear in stores until the 1930s, and trick-or-treating did not become a fixture of the holiday until the 1950s in Canada & U.S.

Not exactly sure when it was first celebrated in the US. According to a History Channel show (The History of Halloween, I believe) and Wikipedia, it was sometime in the 19th century. Been a little bit since I read Irving's classic short story, but I believe generally speaking Balethous van Tassel's party is supposed to be set on or around Halloween. Irving first published "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" in 1820, so that would put Halloween celebrations in the US early in the 19th century.

Wasn't really until the 20th century that Halloween became more a kids holiday in this country. Was more something for adults until then.
