The rings are usually given as a gift in anticipation of marriage. You fulfilled your side of the bargain and them some, since you helped pay them off.
I say he keeps his ring and you keep yours.

Good for you that you had (and probably still have) the financial resources to pay your way
Frankly, it's probably best to keep those rings as far away as possible from you. They are just a reminder of unpleasant times. They serve nothing. They didn't bring you the good and happy times that they promised.
Let him keep the rings. That way, you can start totally fresh!
The rings are super-bad Karma now.
The only way I could see you get the rings back is if you're going to sell them. Split the cost with him. Make it proportionate to reflect of how much, percentage wise, each one of you paid for them. But don't expect to get your investment back!
Then buy yourself something frivolous - like an overpriced Louis Vuitton purse!!!
Good luck!

To me an engagement ring is a gift and when a couple gets divorced each should retain any gifts that was given directly to them. You should definitely get the ring. If a friend buys you a gift for a special occasion he/she doesnt get it back if for some reason the two of you arent friends anymore right?

Once married, the rings belong to you.
An engagement ring only needs to be returned to the man when an engagement is broken.

They are yours to keep. Even if he had paid for them, you can keep the rings.

I took a torch to both of them and melted them together into one ugly blob, then i mounted the diamond on top and left it in her jewelry box with the other things i wasted my hard earned money on.
