My friend has a theory that everyone is subconsiously a bigot. And I think she's right. In America, the first thing most of us do when we see a person is judge based on their appereance, even if we dont say it out loud. What do you think?

Please mature answers only. NO TROLLS.

yes we are all inherently bigotted. we are biased against fat, skinny, tall, short, dark, light, male, female, old, young, handicapped, rich, poor ect... Automatically when we look at another person we place a judgement on them and even beofre they interact with us we have made up in our mind that how you have judge them is the truth about them. It's just how we are, shouldn't be but it is.

In some way, we all are. Depends on the level of prejudice but we're all judge other even not intentionally.

I was watching Henry Cho (a Korean comedian)on the comedy central, he said his mother in law is a nice woman but she would say something like " what an ugly baby, bless his heart" She thinks if she said " bless his heart", then it would be ok. I thought it was funny.

I think that bigotry is a part of everyone's life. I find myself being appalled when I hear someone using a vulgar racial slur yet I find myself speaking badly about Iraqi's (war stuff). I think that I have created a double standard in which the things I say aren't as bad as what another would say....

weird huh?

I think so. Everyone has learned to be a bigot but not everyone has learned to be a racist.

bigotry is learned, and it can be "unlearned". Better yet, make every effort to avoid teaching it to children.

Certainly.... it is normal to judge someone by their appearance or attitude.... ie: I hate rude people or people who think they are entitled.

Those two things are considered bigotry.

How do we stop it???..... No immediate answer...

I don't agree that all of us are bigot's. That's to general of a statement for your friend to make and it's insulting.
