I almost never go to the theater now. DVD's are much better in my opinion because I get to watch them from the comfort of my own home. And I don't have worry about loud or rude people in the theater.

In New York City, where I live, going to a theater is still a good experience worth paying for. I often end up having unexpected discussions about the movie (after the movie of course) with strangers. There is a sense of community, especially when watching non-blockbuster movies.
But when the weather is bad or they don't show a good movie, I love watching a DVD at home. Especially with Netflix (or other movie rental services), the selection of old or foreign movies is very attractive.
So there is a time and place for DVD's at home or the theater.
In some theaters, the place is a mess, people are eating, talking, texting, or making out. This reduces the quality of the theater experience for me. (Maybe I sound old, hehe).

For the most part, I prefer DVD's. There are some movies that are better on the big screen, but at the theaters, I'm usually stuck next to talkers or people making out. I'd rather watch the DVD at home.

Theater. I have watched some absolutely great movies at the theater that were not as interesting on dvd. Especially horror movies. Also the largest tvs are not close to the size of theatre screens.

Depends on the movie - especially now that I have kids, I prefer to just curl up on the couch, pop some popcorn and watch it on our tv.
But if it's a big action flick (something hubby really would go for), then it's usually better in the theater. Plus, then we get to have a date night.
So, I guess it's pretty much a tie. If I had to choose, I would choose the DVD. I'm a homebody and my couch is way more comfortable than the theater seats.
