If you believe in eternal life after; then you do not want to believe the "thing that makes something alive..." "...just joins the universe." Here's why...

Our known universe, the one we can see, is dying. It is running down. It has what is called "positive entropy," which simply means useful energy is waning over the years. Thus, eventually, billions of years from now, our universe will go out like a candle; no more to relight. The final temperature, when that happens, will be absolute zero degrees Kelvin throughout.

That is, if you believe in an eternal after life, joining the universe is not where it's to be found because the universe is not eternal...very long lived by our standards, but not eternal. And, even more, if there are parallel universes, which is pure speculation, chances are better than even they follow similar laws of physics. They, too, will not be eternal in all likelihood.

At this point, life is simply electro-chemical processes. Very complex and little understood, but electro-chemical nonetheless. As science delves deeper into the submolecular realm of the stuff that makes up living things, it is getting closer and closer to being able to fully describe what makes up life.

Life energy and spirit are not terms of physics, but of meta-physics. So far after a few hundred years of experiments, no one has ever been able to reproducably see, create, modify or test these entities, so therefore we conclude that there is no reason to suppose that they exist. What makes something 'alive', seems to be just a series of chemical and electrical reactions. Where the soul or spirit fits into all this is not an issue for science, but rather for ministers, seers and scam artists.

Dude! You need to be the Religion and Spirituality area for this question. There is NO scientific answer to that question. There are some flakey and amusing paranormal ideas about this and some really, really odd New Age gibberish as well.

But nothing scientific.

very interesting question; good that you realize that!
Life energy? is a good term, nobody knows. But I guess its just energy that you can feel, but can't see it; which regulates your body and once its gone the body is just a mere bundle of flesh
