I just finished replacing my clutch line, don't ask me why( it was a long story) and i got brake fluid all over my engine compartment, and some of it on the paint in the engine bay. I tried to wipe off all the brake fluid from the painted areas. and for the rest of the engine bay, i tried spraying water and letting the water and fluid drip off. but the warning labels on the brake fluid bottle makes it seem like brake fluid is really harmful. just how harmful is brake fluid? and is it ok to have the brake fluid spill on other parts of my engine? right now i'm contemplating getting a steam clean to get all the brake fluid out of my engine bay.

Brake fluid is water solluble. Steam cleaning the engine is just a waste of time. brake fluid has the same density as water (They are compatible). But brake fluid has a chemicle similar to antifreeze. except the boiling point is alot greater. so, it can remove paint and is very harmful if digested.

Its harmful to paint. It will take paint off. Other than that it doesn't hurt rubber or metal. I would wash your engine with a Oil Eater or simple green and a garden hose just to clean it up. Do it when the engine is cold and don't spray directly on electronic components.

It should be no problem, just wash with a good detergent car wash solution, the warning is a generic warning manufacturers put on their product to legally protect themselves, because their products could under some circumstances cause the paint to come off or fade.

it will destroy paint in an aggressive manner. but it is also water soluble. so spraying it down with water was a good idea. there is probably no damage.
