There are many things that you can do to improve high blood pressure that don't involve medicine. Diet and exercise are always first on the list but there are some rather innovative products on the market that can help some people. I've been diagnosed with hypertension for about 10 years and am not the best at keeping to a good exercise regimen. I have had good luck with a product called resperate. Its a little portable CD-player sized device that helps you lower your breathing rate to less than 10 breaths a minute for about 15 minutes. It is not known why exactly this helps to lower blood pressure but it does work. Its been through several successful clinical trials and there are lots of success stories out there. The first thing you need to know is why is your blood pressure high, and how high is it?

High blood pressure is dangerous because the extra pressure inside the blood vessels can make them burst. If this happens in little capillaries in your hands for instance, it is unsightly, but not that dangerous, but if it happens in your brain it can be fatal, or at least permanently incapacitating.

When treating someone with high blood pressure it is important to improve the integrity of the blood vessels. To do this, the herbs hawthorn, horsechestnut, buckwheat (as a food), and most fresh fruit and veg can help.

In an article from a publication called JMPT (Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics) in June 2001, Water-only Fasting was used to successfully treat High Blood Pressure. It was medically supervised, and included a two to three day pre-feed period of fruits and vegetables. The fast lasted ten days on average, followed by a six to seven day re-feed period. Every subject who was medicated for hypertension at the beginning of the study was able to discontinue meds by the end. Not often heard, and certainly not popular. It does indicate that any motivated individual is about two weeks away from normal blood pressure if they choose.

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. As for vitamins, magnesium is important so if you were to take a Calcium/magnesium supplement that would be smart.

There is evidence that salt is not the primary culprit in high blood pressure. Stress levels have a lot to do with it as well as chemical deficiencies in your body. try to get more calcium into your diet and start taking a magnesium supplement. These two things should help a lot with your troubles!

To add an aromatherapeutic point of view, you can also help hypertension by avoiding herbs and essential oils that increase it such as Thyme, Rosemary, Sage and Hyssop (sometimes they're included in teas, food, even creams and ointments. Look out for them in the ingredients by their latin names, which are Thymus vulgaris, Rosmarinus officinalis, Hyssopus officinalis and Salvia officinalis).

You can also use herbs and essential oils that lower blood pressure such as Clary Sage, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Marjoram and Melissa. Melissa is an excellent heart tonic, but it's very expensive and therefore usually adulterated with Lemongrass, so unless you trust your supplier, avoid that one. All the above oils can be used in a diffuser safely, but start with very low doses so you can benefit from their vibration rather than the quantity. I suggest you start with 6 drops and not increase unless you keep the diffuser/burner in a very big room.

If you want to use them in your bath, you either need to have a shower first or use a base bubble bath (unscented, biological, especially designed for aromatherapy use) because essential oils should not be mixed with commercial bubble baths. If you haven't got a base bubble bath, just take a shower first and then add the number or drops below in a tbs of a carrier oil (e.g. Sweet Almond, Grapeseed, Evening Primrose, Jojoba, Olive oil etc):

Lavender - up to 6
Clary Sage - up to 4, but don't use it if you're pregnant, or suffer from endometriosis, breast, ovarian and uterine cysts or any other oestrogen-dependant conditions (cancers). And do not drink alcohol afterwards.
Ylang Ylang - up to 3
Marjoram - up to 6, but put a drop on a pulse point first and cover it with a band aid and wait for a few hours to see if you're allergic to it.
Melissa: up to 3, but do a patch test first and avoid if you're pregnant.

Another super-fast way to get the oils into your system is by adding no more than 2 drops of your chosen oil into your foot soak. In foot soaks, make sure the water is lukewarm, not hot. You should also make sure the water is not too hot in baths, too. Just pleasantly warm.

In either case, soak yourself or your feet for approximately 20 minutes, or more if you want to.
