Because Newark is what a lot of people know of New Jersey and parts of Newark are very industrial and smell. If they venture away from the dirty, industrial parts of Newark, I think their impression would change.

I grew up in Central Jersey the capital area actually! I loved growing up there. There are beautiful beaches, State Parks and many cultural places to visit in the state. You can experience reenactments from the Revolution. Also, there are beautiful mountainous areas in the North West. The North eastern portion gets a bad rap because of the smog and pollution coming in from NY City! All states have their bad sections!
Keep in mind some great people came from Jersey--
1.Thomas Edison

2. Dick Button, Olympic ice skater and commentator. Ranked 11 on the Sports Illustrated list of The 50 Greatest New Jersey Sports Figures.

3. David Cassidy, actor and musician, best known for his role on The Partridge Family.
4. Charles Lindbergh, aviator.
5.Joey Travolta, actor
6.John Travolta, actor.
7.Eddie Murphy, comedian and actor.

8.Judy Blume author of children's books

9.Woodrow Wilson lived there from 1890 till he became president

10. Mary Hay McCauly better known as "Molly Pitcher" became legendary during the Battle of Monmouth when she brought pitchers of water to the tired and thirsty soldiers.
Frank Sinatra was born in 1915 in Hoboken, New Jersey.

11.Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin was born in Montclair, New Jersey in 1930. He was a lunar module pilot on the first manned landing on the moon, Apollo 11.
