How much would it cost to get a 1988 camaro's engine rebuilt? It's in fair condition besides a mysterious clicking noise and it likes to die sometimes when it's idling..some mechanics have suggested just having it rebuilt

Most guys have learned to start with twice as much cash in your pocket than you think (or know) it will cost. There's always something that comes up that costs more than expected.

Most machine shops charge around $600-800 (+) to do a complete rebuild. You bring in the motor that you and your buddies pulled and drop it off. They will clean the motor first by either hot tanking it or power washing it. The they will take it apart and magnaflux the block and heads and intake manifold (if cast iron) to check for cracks. If it's not cracked anywhere then they will pull the camshaft bearings, free plugs, etc., and then bore out the cylinders and so on.

If you pay someone to pull it and rebuild it and re-install it then you are looking at around $2,000-3,000. You could also have them swap it out with a ready to install rebuilt motor that will carry a warranty of like 3yrs 50,000 miles.

Your clicking noise is most likely caused by bad wear on the camshaft lobes and this also would indicate low oil pressure which is why the motor keeps stalling at idle.

The least you should do is replace the main and rod bearings (and the oil pump while you are in there) and install a new camshaft and lifters. This is darn near as hard as a rebuild but cheaper especially if you do it yourself. If you just need the car to get from point A to point B then it'll continue running for years to come unless there are other undiagnosed problems.

Good Luck!

1st, off not enough info

is the sound coming from the LOWER engine or UPPER or the WATER pump or is the fan hitting something

how to know ... get a 2ft screw driver. Put the handle to your ear then place the flat tip on the motor in various places .... listen while it talks to you. Then go from their.

it likes to die ... hoping you have a Rochester carb, the best ever, is it idling at the right speed, 700 rpm auto 900 rpm standard are your vacuum hoses connected correctly, ask an expert, like me if you like.

have what rebuilt the carb or the engine or both. 1,200 for the engine basic machining 100 for the carb

clicking noise is probably your rocking arms need tightened and the dying is probably a carburetor problem. Try having that rebuilt for about a hundred or less. To rebuild the whole motor yourself it might cost another hundred or more in parts. or someone to do it, buy some vaseline cause it vwill be salty.

To rebuild an engine here in australia your lookin at about 1200 bucks for everything to do it your self....The ticking noise could be a valve that needs tightning or it could be an injector/s thus causing the engine to die in the bum..hope this helps
