As long as both have batteries of the same voltage, yes. Used to be there were 6, 12, and 24 volt power systems so if one is old, it might be an oddball. Number of cylinders is not relevant.

Yup.
Just don't rev up the engine on the dead truck until AFTER the cables are disconnected.
Unless you like replacing alternators too.
ADDED:
Give it a couple minutes to get somewhat of a charge before you try to start it.

i used a 4 cylinder ford ranger to jump start semi trucks.all you got to do is hook your jumper cables up right and wait about 5-10 minutes.the key thing to do is charge the dead battery up first.
