Sounds like it could be a ground/corrosion issue. Look at your battery ground cable, make sure it is good and tight, check where it mounts to(usually the block) and make sure the same. If that checks good, disconnect the cable on both ends, find an Ohmmeter, and ohm the cable out. It should be real close to 0, as little as 1 ohm of resistance in the battery cables can make it hard to start.

Sounds like you need to shim the starter. Like someone else said, GMs are notorious for this problem. I don't know a lot about the GM 302, I have only seen one in person. They are pretty rare, also a peppy engine. Hang on to it.

High compression motors like a 302 need a high torque starter to crank them---is yours a high torque or standard. Cold start issue could be that or battery not enough amps or poor cable connections. Hot start issue sounds like heat soak in the starter from headers or the engine---wrap the starter in header tape to minimize that effect. If you get a high torque mini-starter, it'll probably take care of both problems.

first I would say get rid of the 302 which is a ford motor and put in a chevy motor. But other than that I would say the crank is bad.
