My tank has completed a full cycle, everything seemed to be going well (2 mollies, 2 platies) in a 10 gal. tank. My ammonia level has been perfect, but out of no where one molly died that seemed completely healthy. Then the other was acting sick and died this morning. Now, one platy is acting weird, hiding in a rock formation, not eating or swimming and the other is darting around and not eating. The pet shop is closed today, I appreciate any help you can give! Thanks.

I've only tested for ammonia levels, they were "ideal". Also, I washed the tank before set up. It has been running for about 6 weeks now. I don't use an aquarium salt, as I supposed i should have with the mollies. The temp is at 76-78 degrees. The first molly to die was all black and he was very bloated when I found him. He could have been dead for over a day though. The second molly to go was all white, therefore I couldn't see any ick on her. She wasn't eating or swimming much the day she died. However, when I scooped her from the tank, I noticed white fins (?) or some type of stuff floating around like it came off her. I tried to clean all of it out that I could.

Are the fins on the fish splayed or flat against the body,
Have you checked the following?
Ammonia (your said it had been perfect check again)
Nitrite, Nitrate
Temp
pH
When did you add the fish how long has it been cycling for?
and then as MM suggested any damage or obvious blemish's on the fish themselves.

Molly's are difficult to keep unless you use salt has as been suggested, if that been the case and you've not used it that might be why they've died, are the platys male and female as she would hide away from his incessant behavior, while he would dart back and forth looking for her.

AJ

What is the pH, it's possible there's nothing wrong here and the molly's have died through the wrong water for them, the substance does however, suggest an irritant as that could possibly be excess slime, the fact it was bloated as you said could be down to time.

How long have you had the tank fully set up and cycling ?
Any white spots or white fuzz..anything out of the norm on the fish ?
Have you tested the PH level in the tank ?
Do you use Aquarium salt in the tank ?
Do you use a water conditioner in the tank ?
The answers to these questions will help finding the answer.

Do you test for your nitrates and nitrites? My friend has a full tank of cute little fish...so he told me to tell you to check for the temp too. Its possible that they also got stressed from something. There is also the possibility for a fish disease...try a broad spectrum anti biotic maned for fish. Go into your fish store tomorrow and they can help you. In the mean time look for some signs, do they have white spots? that's icky. Are their bodies bloated, fins rotting, eyes popping out? Its really hard to tell exactly whats wrong with your fish without having mor info. Just go into your fish store and talk to them tomorrow. Keep an eye on them in the mean time.

When you say the second molly was acting sick, what exactly do you mean? Please add that detail to your question. Also, look over the fish in the tank and look for anything at all about them that looks different or unusual. Color different, bumps, lumps, fin damage anything at all and please add that to your question as well. That extra inormation will help us to help you and your fish.

I'll check back shortly and edit my answer when you have the additional information.

The only thing I can think of is that stuff you drop in to take away the toxins. You can get it at Wal-mart, it is kind of an oily substance. I had a betta and a guppy and when I moved into a house where I had city water instead of well water my fish kept dying. I used some of this stuff and it cleared the toxins....unfortunately too late. Good Luck...I hope you are able to solve the problem.
