Car we think had rolled onto it side as it has minor damage down the passenger side. Cars starts fine, seems fine if you don't touch the steering. Can't figure out why the wheel shakes so much when the steering wheel is turned.

Air in the power steering box.

Does it shake when the car is parked and you turn the wheel? If so it's probably the power steering pump, or the belt is slipping. It would make a nasty shrieking sound. Smell could be from either the belt getting toasted or a damaged pump.

A mechanic could of course assess this much better. :)

does the steering wheel shake or the whole vehicle...could be air bound in the power steering system, or it could be a bent wheel or tie rod/steering knuckle....what's with the sound and smell?

Damaged steering box.

ADDED:
I'm re-thinking this one, try changing the drive belt to the power steering pump.(friction burned)
Or the pulley is bent.

The tie rods, and possible bearings, and axle are damaged. Apparently, was fixed enough to get it rolling, and sell it off quickly.
