my oscar will only occupy the right side of my 55g tank. he is alone with a pleco. he only stays on the side next to my bed. i hardly ever see him on the other side. and the odd part is all the live plants and rocks are on the left side where he can hide. does any one else have this problem?

I would suggest that he's that side because he see's you that side of the bed, i suppose when you enter the room you go and sit to look at him, so you've conditioned him to be at that end in anticipation of you entering. They're like the dog of the fish world, and he'll wait there patiently for you.

All fishes, including Oscars, have their favourite places and areas in the tank.

Oscars being cichlids, have their own favourite territory as well. Your fish has developed its own territory, which is a good sign that it is now accustomed with the tank it lives in.

Even if you add a fish or two in the future, it would not be a problem because your existing fish already have its own command base :-)

My cichlids like to stay on the left side of my tank, and I couldn't figure out why until I realized that was the side I always fed them on. For fun, try to feed your Oscar on the left side and see what happens. Supposedly, these fish are the brighter crayons of the fish box, so they can learn and respond to changes.
