You could have done a variety of things. the knee is relatively unprotected by surrounding muscles and is often injured by blows, sudden stops or turns especially those associated with sports.Torn ligaments are the most common and produce a variety of symptoms such as pain, swelling caused by fluid build up, tenderness when touched, bruising etc. Torn meniscus are very common and very painful. Take it from one who knows. The can cause severe pain, causing a limp, or swelling and difficulty with moving it. Don't wait, get it checked out. When I tore my meniscus, I waited to long to have it treated and it only made matters worse in the end. The meniscus, in case you don't know, is a curved, fibrous cartilage in the knee. If it's torn, many times a doctor will perform minor surgery to fix it. From what you describe, this sounds like you damaged that in some way. Hope I'm wrong. An MRI will definitely show any damage. Go see your doctor and in the meantime, rest it. Use cold packs on it to keep any swelling down until you see your MD.

This may be a case of patellafemoral syndrome, where the articulation between the knee cap and the end of the femur is not congruent. This is usually more prevalent in women due to our structural differences. Yet, it can also be caused by weakness in one particular part of the quadriceps as well as tightness of the iliotibial band on the outer part of the leg. Pain usually occurs when the quadricpes are required to be active...going up and down stairs, getting up and down from a chair, etc. It also sounds like you need further evaluation to make sure there is not any structural damage such as a torn meniscus. If it is either of the above, your next step in care should be physical therapy where more hands on examination can be done in order to attempt to correct the problem and decrease pain.
