Well, the Puritans outlawed the celebration of Christmas in Boston, and probably the rest of New England as well, from 1659 to 1681. But places like New York and Virginia were not under the control of the Puritans, so they would have been celebrating the holiday at that time. They may have celebrated Christmas in Jamestown some time between it's founding in 1607 and 1610. And the Spanish were establishing colonies in Florida before the English, French, and Dutch. So probably some time in the 1550s to the 1560's.

However, officially the United States did not exsist until the Revolution ended in the 1780s. From the start of the Revolution in 1775 and it's end in 1783, the thirteen colonies were English colonies rebelling against the crown and fighting for their freedom. Since the question is "when was Christmas first celebrated in the US," I'd have to say the 1780s.

I would think that it would have been celebrated by the Spaniards soon after Columbus discovered America in 1492. The Vikings, of course, arrived in America prior to Columbus in the 10th century (about the same time Christianity was introduced to them) and they might have celebrated Christmas. The way we
celebrate Christmas (Christmas tree, gifts, Christmas cards) can be traced to Victorian England and dates back to about 1840. My understanding is that the colonists in the 1770s also celebrated Christmas.
