As they are egg layers they don't technically get pregnant, but the female can be full of eggs. She would be much heavier in the main part of her body and belly area. and frankly just look quite fat. Here's a picture of a fairly gravid female:

"pregnant" is not right. Paradise fish are labyrinth fish, and blow bubble nests to deposit their eggs in. A female laden with eggs is called "gravid" and will have a swollen and darker area around their anal fins.

I get your point here. Paradise fish are usually red...but make sure it is female and it's tummy will look full.
