The air in our 1999 Grand Am has not worked since we bought it last fall. We went to Advance Auto to get the refill kit, and a representative there came out to help us with it. When he attached the kit with a gause, it showed that the car was already full. He "said" that we would just need to have it cleaned out, then it could be refilled again.

I am leary about trusting advice from someone that is not mechanic, but I am also afraid to take it to a mechanic because I am female- and yada yada yada....

Anyway- from you mechanics out there- should I be prepared for something more serious, like a faulty clutch, or switch, etc?

I do not believe it would be a leak- or the gauge wouldn't show it as full- am I right or wrong??

Any ideas on what the problem might be? Thanks so much!

OK when you try the air con does it make a noise like a clicking noise, does the engine RPM drop when you turn it on.To verify these questions get someone to turn the A/Con while the engine is running and see if the A/Cclutch engages,if the answer is yes then it could still be low on r134a refridgerant, unless the fellow that helped you new exactly what the pressure specs were I can't see how he new it was full.I do not know where you live it would be very easy to direct you if you lived on the west coast of Canada.
There a few things it can be from pressure switches to temp sensors it's hard to direct you to the exact cause of it not working, but you should take it to someone who is qualified on A/C some times we just have to bite the bullet.

It could be something stupidly simple like a blown fuse, loose wire, disconnected switch by the previous owner.

Go see a pro if you're not familiar with the system.

ADDED:
For all that matter, someone could have removed the fuse to use for the lights or something.
Check the basics.
Are the fuses there, and good?
Is the compressor plugged in?
Does the A/C light come on when you push the button?
Can you hear the clutch "click on" when you turn it on?
Does it get cold before the engine warms up?

check your fuses. make sure you turn on the a\c switch in the car. the blower. if all this is good. check your relay. remove and jump relay with paper clip. terminal 85 and 87 to jump relay. if that don't work you have big problem and i would need to know the results from these tests. good luck.

you maybe out of oil, what i means is R-134a plus OIL, the reason is because the oil acts like a cataylist to start the reaction to get cold air, at least that is what i was told.
