512 is referring to the amount of ram (memory). It never hurts to buy as much ram as you can afford or as fast a processor as you can afford. You will never want a slower pc & you will have a decent system for longer. A decent middle of the road video card is good enough also unless your into playing games, designing software, video editing or any other resource intensive applications. If your just looking to surf the internet, get email & basic other uses you don't need all the bells & whistles.
Unless you download movies, hoard music or giant files, you don't need to hugest harddrive out there, 50gig's should be way more than enough & able to keep up with increasing programs sizes.
BTW - don't buy a pc with Vista installed just yet. Wait until Vista has it's first big service pack release which will take care of all the bugs in it. Plus Vista is a bit of a resource hog, if your looking for a cheaper basic pc go with XP which doesn't demand as much ram, harddrive & other components.
Here are some guides to help you decide what you want.

512 RAM is pretty light for today's standards. Depending on the operating system you are getting, you would want minimum 1GB RAM for XP and 2GB RAM for Vista.
As for the other, it could have been a graphic card, processor, etc. It is hard to guess. If you remember post again.

You have received a reasonable response from Mike so far.
My opinion: If you are considering using Windows Vista, then I recommend at least 1GB of RAM... If you want a very fast Vista experience, you should consider 2GB of RAM.
About HD capacity: Your HD is where all your data and craps are stored, such as your music file, picture file, video file, software, etc. I highly recommend at least 120GB HD.
You just heard from Dad.
Lata.
