The doctor probably said holter monitor. This is a device they put on you, sort of like an EKG, and it monitors your heart for 24 hours then you get it removed. This is done as an outpatient. They then take the information recorded and make a diagnosis. It is not painful, no needles, just sticky electrodes. Your aunt might have congestive heart failure or pulmonary hypertension. I have swollen ankles and am being tested for these conditions right now. I also just had an echocardiogram. It is like an ultrasound of the heart.

Im not sure about the monitor but swollen ankles and already on b/p meds and water pill is a sign that she has poor circulation or a heart that is not pumping very well or both they often run together. Feet above the heart helps , compression stockings, and they even make a device that squeezes the legs to promote circulation. Don't be surprised that none of this helps all that well. They even have operations that open up veins to let the circulation to improve . Its the pain and the loss of mobility that you should be scared of. Look at the color of her skin and the texture in the lower leggs . Avoid letting them get dry

She wouldn't happen to be diabetic as well, would she?

If so, your aunt needs to see to her health NOW before the continuous problems with her feet cause her to LOSE them! A diabetic's circulation is not the best at any time. She needs to take all steps that the doctor is recommending to increase her blood flow whether that means losing weight, or wearing support hose, or a daily walking regimen.

It just makes me so frustrated to have people totally ignore the advice of their physicians, and then to have something horrendous like amputations to deal with as a consequence.

Sorry Susie i can't help you with the hospital monitor thing, but i can tell you eating fresh or tinned pineapple can reduce fluid pretty quickly, and it's a natural diuretic...
You say your aunt is taking water tablets, which means frequent visits to the ladies powder room...(toilet)
pineapple will do the same, it's best she knows this in advance..but i use it and it definitely works...hope this helps some....best wishes xx

I have swollen ankles! My Dr. says to drink a lot of water. I know that keeps me busy in the bathroom but it helps. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis , and I am in a wheel chair power chair. So my legs don't get much exercise. I am moving them as much as I can now to keep the circulation in them. But plenty of fluids help.I have begun to drink at least one gallon of water a day! Plus a can of pop now and then or a glass of iced tea as well as two mugs of coffee every morning.

Does your aunt have kidney problems? This could be a sign. Does your aunt have a congested heart or angina? This also could be sign of something serious. I hope the doctor can find out quickly.

They will probably hook her up to a EKG in the hospital. I hope everything works out.

my mom suffers from that too, and she uses a spanish pain relieving oitment named "manteca maslac", or you can also say "manteca de ubre", it is very effective, she applies it at night and the next day she is fine, no swolen ankles. thing is this oitment is very hard to find. i know she has to get it in farmacies where they sell spanish items. it costs about $5.00 for a 90g tin can. i call it the miracle cream. try to get it by the internet, i never tried before but you might find it
