they aren't moving much and are having trouble swimming
and literally look as if they are dying..we've had them for about 3 years or something..
Right now they are in a vertical position and are still breathing but look really ill... My mom just changed the water and everything.. The water before was green and looked as if it was full of ammonia and algae ..
Help please? what should we do?

3 years is a really long time for goldfish. im sorry to say it but, they are on there last strings. its better if you flush them now because they are suffering and probably won't make it til morning. your mom shouldn't be touching them with the oil on her hands but thats beside the point..
flush them to keep them from suffering and go get some more tomorrow... they are goldfish not clown fish or rainbow fish.
good luck

Hi, it sounds like you have an ammonia build up & needed to change the water badly. Hopefully things will settle down soon, I would suggest a 50% water change with treated or aged water daily for several days to dilute the ammonia. The first 2 attached links give several explanations for head standing & tail standing (you don't say which) but as you have had them for some time I think the probable cause is ammonia.

I would recommend you do regular weekly 30 to 40% water changes as tank water should not be green & Goldfish need regular partial water changes to remain healthy. Get a test kit for your tank so you can monitor your parameters, Aquarium Pharmaceuticals make one called a Master Test Kit that has the 4 basic essential tests including ammonia. The last link tells you about partial water changes, it is rather long but please read it through-it's a vital part of fish keeping. Hope this is of use to you & your fishes.

I'm so sorry to hear that but your initial post suggested you had water problems with your tank-your additional posts suggested it was only one fish that was having trouble breathing-that sounded like he had a piece of gravel stuck in his mouth in which case you could have carefully removed it with tweezers.

Were they looking that sick before you changed the water? If not double check to be sure you used chlorine remover in the new water. Also a sudden change in temperature is not easy for the fish to adjust to and could be part of the problem.

Also, you mention that the water was looking pretty bad before. A change to lots of clean water very quickly can shock the fish just as bad as going from good water to bad water. I would suggest you leave his light off and leave him in a nice quite room and see if he can adjust to the new conditions.

Best of luck and hope he makes it

Check the PH level of your water. A thing to do to clean away possible bacterial or fungal infections is to dunk them in salt water for about 5 seconds. They may help. I suggest checking the PH level of your water. If the PH level is to high that may be what's causing the fish's behavior. You can buy things to adjust PH level at your local pet shop. Another thing you might do is change the water. Be mindful that you have to let the water sit for about 24 hours in order to get rid of chlorine or other chemicals that may be in your water. Allow the water to reach a normal temperature one that is not warm and not extremely cold. Extremes in temperature can kill fish. If none of these things work I wouldn't suggest a vet since many fish diseases are difficult to diagnose and treat. If the fish does not seem to be getting better then you should flush it. I had a similar problem with one of my comet goldfish. He jumped out of the tank and got a bacterial/fungal infection during the minute or so that he was flopping around on the floor. We got him back in the tank. He swam around normally for awhile and then he began having trouble. Half of him turned white and he did things similar to what you have described. Dunking him in salt water for 5 seconds and then putting him back in the tank seemed to cure him of his ailment. Again if the saltwater doesn't work check the PH level and change the water. Best of luck I hope everything turns out allright.

i think if no longer something has replaced, the fish is pregnant, if the fish had an infection or another subject, there could be different signs and indications or indications different than the enlarged abdomen.
