How could it be a slow, painful process? Or maybe something quick...

Sure. If you were in a submarine and at a depth that you couldn't survive out side, and the sub suddenly ruptured. you would die from implosion. I don't know how pain full that would be. explosion is pressure from within going out, implosion is pressure from out side pushing in.

That depends on what implodes....I don't know of any conditions which could cause the human body to implode....but anyone on board a submarine that exceeds its "crush depth" will certainly die as the vessel's hull implodes.
