Writing them down--as many times as necessary--until I remember them.

Why? Because that's the only way I was able to make school work stay in my head for exams.

Chunking (a legit psychology term). For more info check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chunking_(psychology) Here is a good example:

Say you have to memorize 12101946. If you break the numbers up and think about them like December (12 corresponds to the month of December) 10, 1946 you will be more likely to remember that than 12101946. it is sort of like using a mnemonic device.

Usually people can remember about 7 numbers when given a long string of numbers to recall. When possible, try to associate those numbers with something meaningful to you.

use a tape recorder and tape what you need to memorize.
listen to it over and over and over again. Using headphones
is effective but just listening to something several times.....
you will learn it. As an example I wanted to learn song
lyrics, so I listened to the song at least 8 times and I did
memorize every single word. Also, if you want to remember
a phone number write it down a few times and visualize
the numbers, it's almost like your brain takes a picture of
what you want to memorize. I was in school plays and had
to memorize scripts. You read it, read it again and again
all of a sudden without you realizing it you will memorize
lists, phone numbers etc. word association helps too.

The method I use the most is repetition, either memorizing or writing down as others here have said.
The other methods are through association. One method was described as association of loci. A person has a picture of something, like a street they are very familiar with. As they walk down the street in their mind, they assign each item to remember to something they would see as they walked the street.
You can also associate each with a particular odor, because the mind tends to remember odors and things associated with it.
Whenever trying to remember something, try to cut down distractions. Try to do it in a quiet room, although mellow music without words sometimes helps.
I think repetition is the best way, however, because it is the easiest to perform and carry with you.

i use visual - 1 is a lighthouse, 2 is a swan, 3 is a pair of breasts - with this method I will spin a short ' video' in my mind around the Lighthouse or the swan or the boobs. So If i need to remember Marketing as the first -I would imagine a superMarket trolly on top of the lighthouse.
Otherwise i memorise names in sequence of a vivid imaginitave 'video' - we all remember our favourite movies so I use that method to memorise a made up sequence - the more zany the better - read Tony Buzan

I personally find for me the best method is putting the numbers to a tune and chanting them under my breath (or out loud, depending on who I'm around and whether they'll think I'm crazy.)

But it's totally dependant on who you are and how you learn.
