My male betta seems to blow a lot of bubbles. The bubbles are not clumped together, so I don't think it would be a bubble nest. When I watch it swim, every so often it will blow a small bubble which rises to the surface of the water. Is this normal?

Yes, it's fairly well normal and it is most likely him kinda thinking about blowing a bubble nest for lack of a better way to describe it. They don't always blow a good nest when they first start.

Your betta is most likely building a bubble nest. Or he is just board and enjoys to blow bubbles. If your betta starts gulping for air at the top though, you need to test you water because it probably is high or low in pH or something else. Otherwise he should be fine. If he doesn't have a air bubbler you might consider getting him one.
Good Luck!

Yep just like everyone was saying it's a bubble nest and hes probably not trying very hard but, when hes ready for a female certain times of the year there will be a really nice one built even if he has no female.

Yes this is very normal, it means your betta is happy. Or maybe he's trying to build a bubble nest but just isnt really trying that hard. my male betta blows bubbles to form a bubble nest every week, i have a female but im not ready to breed them.

This is very normal...kinda just for entertainment. But he will practice the bubble thing but won't make an actual nest until you show him a female beta. Then he will go to town...lol
