We are making a children's book out of felt and want to make sure it'll be washable.

Felt will not be washable. I have made children's books from muslin. You just have to fuse 2 pages together with iron-on fusible webbing to make them stiff, and cut the edges with pinking shears so they won't fray.

felt does not stand up well to washing, often the colors run as well, simply the felting process does not lend to it being substantial enough for washing. even so called washable felt wont survive many washings.

yeah felt is washable but you don't need to wash it before you make stuff with it

Before you make the book, take a piece of the felt you are going to use and wash it. Cheaper felts will shred.
