I just had a new radiator installed into my Grandfathers car and noticed there was no coolant in the container by the engine. Does there need to be coolant even if it's a new radiator?

That is the overflow container. There would normally be a nominal amount of coolant in it when cool, and more when the engine is hot. There should be a marking on the container for normal or full cold, and another for hot.

Yes, the coolant reservoir has a cold full mark to the coolant should be at. Be sure to open the radiator cap when cold to check the level there. Fill the radiator then the reservior.

yes there should be antifreeze coolant in the resevoir tank sometimes the car will have a air pocket in the cooling system that you cant get out until you drive it and if there is not coolant in the resevoir then your cooling system may not be performing properly if you dont fill it to the cold fill mark and drive it if you dont you are running the risk of engine damage

that bottle on the side there is an overflow/extra tank...What it does is if the radiator becomes to hot it will create more pressure and has to be releived so it pumps it into this bottle and from there it goes out to the ground, but only under extreme heat and pressure...or if the radiator is over full.....The other reason for it is if the radiator happens to loose some coolent for some reason or it gets rid of an airlock (which has happened to you) it will suck whats in this bottle out into the radiator..So i wouldnt be to worried about there being nothing in it as it is a new radiator and probably didnt get bled properly....Just top it up...If it keeps disapearing then id be keeping an eye on the level in the radiator and take it back...I hope this helps

Yes, but sometimes the engine "burps" and the level will drop, just top it off. If it goes down again, you have a leak somewhere.

It should be half full when the engine is cold.
Top it off.
And check the radiator too....
