I love seeing old tv shows or movies with old cell phones, they are so huge!

Do I ever. I remember when my father got his first cell phone in the 80's. It was as big as a house phone and you had to carry a bag with you everywhere you went (it was the battery)! Now I have a Motorola Razor. Guess the world has come a long way.

Hope you don't mind my first semi-frivolous answer. I don't have a cell phone. I do, however, have a method for some folks to get in touch with me.
If they get the cell phones down cheaper than the land-lines, I'll probably spring for one and disconnect from the land-line.
I do have one interesting way to get in touch, however. One time, whilst at work, the land-lines at work went out and everyone was scrambling to borrow someone else's cell phone. A few folks had been amused as I had been taking a 'walkie-talkie' to work to amuse myself during the 12 hour night shifts. I used it to chat with folks in Canada and locally during lunch hour. They were quite surprised when I pulled out that gadget, hit a few buttons, and the dial tone came up. A few more buttons and I had placed a phone call to home. Without a cell phone.
Some months ago, I was watching television when that 'walkie-talkie' came to life and it was a friend (and owner of a Yahoo computer group) calling me from British Columbia. Seems he had a few problems to discuss concerning our computer group on Yahoo. No problem, fired up the computer.
When I'm driving around or at a friend's house, I really don't need to be interrupted. The land-line answering machine can handle the calls. A few friends can, however, get in touch with me. Most interesting. Years ago, before cell phones, we had this capability and were called 'geeks'. In reality, it is simply amateur radio. No charges. It works for me :D
btw, these things are quite small today. Similar to newer cell phones, they are smaller than a pack of cigarettes. They can, however, pack some range. I have directly hit Canada, New York, and Pennsylvania.
Please forgive the shameless plug on the URL attached. If interested, click on the link. No Morse code involved LOL.
Best regards from Rochester, NY
Jim
